Seafaring Sunday: Prince of Privateers

October 7, 1864: USS Wachusette captures the Confederate commerce raider CSS Florida in violation of neutrality laws off the coast of Bahia, Brazil. Florida, whose short two year career had seen her bring in 33 Union merchant ships as prizes, was known as the Prince of Privateers. While being brought in to Boston Harbor, she was "accidentally" sunk off Newport News, Virginia on November 28.
