December 20, 1822: The U.S. Congress authorizes a flotilla of Navy ships to battle piracy in the Caribbean. The so called Mosquito Fleet will be commanded by Captain David Porter and will effectively wipe out piracy in the Gulf and the Caribbean.A bit more here at the Naval History Blog.
