The only time an officer would be called with "Lay to", it was to be considered an emergency....<br /><br />Any time I stood Officer of the Deck, I was careful to stress to my Petty Officer of the Watch to be mindful of the difference, and we generally had no surprises. When I advanced to Command Duty Officer, I had to train watchstanders occasionally who did not know the difference (or worse: did not care!)<br /><br />Thank you, Pauline.Charles L.
